“Chiostro dei folli di Dio” (cloister of the Holy Fools) is a suggestive image that describes certain peculiar figures of the Florentine clergy in the twentieth century, characterized by intense and radical spirituality. Florence, a city with deep religious and cultural roots, has seen the emergence of priests and clergymen, as well as lay people, who, through their work and example, have incarnated a prophetic spirit that is often at odds with the dynamics of society and the Church of the time. These figures have interpreted the priesthood as a radical call, pushing themselves to the margins to serve the least and witness to the Gospel in new forms. The new work has left an indelible mark not only in the history of the Florentine church, offering a model of holiness based on radical coherence with the Gospel, often in tension with traditional institutions and canons, but also in the cultural and political history of the country.
