This PhD project aims to investigate the Sharif Hussein revolt of 1916-1918 in the context of shaping modern Islamic attitudes towards apocalypticism and eschatology. It seeks to examine this connection from three dimensions: First, the study investigates the specific apocalyptic motifs and narratives that permeated the doctrinal landscape of the Arabian limb of the Ottoman Empire during the lead-up to the revolt. Second, it analyzes their impact on shaping Sharif Hussein’s call for “holy war” against the young Turks and those who “corrupted the sacred institution of the caliphate”. Third, it examines the religious commentary on the revolts during and immediately after their occurrence.
