New technologies and ethics for non-sentient beings (asattva) in Japanese Buddhism

Francesco Maria Catanzaro

This research stems from an analysis of doctrinal developments in Japanese Buddhism — emphasizing the non-distinction between sentient (sattva) e non-sentient (asattva) being — in relation to materiality and technology. Concepts such as hongaku shisō (original enlightenment of all things), sōmoku jōbutsu (buddhahood of the non-sentient) and immo (thusness or suchness of things) may hint at a different understanding of human relationship — ethical and soteriological — with things and, by extension, technologies.
