The project examines the relationship between the Catholic Church, animal magnetism and spiritualism in 19th-century Italy, focusing on two thematic nuclei: the normative framework (decrees, encyclicals, etc.) of the somnambulic-spiritic trance and its «spiritual technologies»; Catholic discursive productions aimed at giving a theological and cultural assessment of such phenomena.
