In the last few years the scientific research has intensely investigated the languages and the strategies used by power to conquer the society. These studies have analyzed the transformation of governement’s methods across the centuries. Starting from these studies, the purpose of my project is to investigate the languages of power used in Rome during the XVII century by the relevant Barberini family, one member of which, Maffeo, became pope as Urban VIII. Specifically, my research intends to analyze two across-the-board languages of power, promotion of charity and patronage, in order to demonstrate that these two languages increased the visibility and esteem of the family, playing a significant role in the credit and accomplishments attained by Barberini.
